Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $2,000,000)

Community Capacity Development’s goal is to eliminate gun violence in the five boroughs of New York City. Each borough has areas or catchments with densely populated under resourced communities that are always in the throes of social unrest. Without access to sustainable resources these communities often release their frustration in violence, specifically gun violence. Our goal is to eliminate gun violence by understanding the pulse, needs and challenges of our neighborhoods on a real time and intimate basis. We will do this by patrolling high risk areas with recognized and respected community members, developing a rapport with community leaders, providing in school training, and educating and earning support from law enforcement. The idea is to humanize responses to social unrest by sitting with people and listening and learning about their challenges. We will then provide them with referral services where applicable. Additionally, we will identify and mentor high risk individuals with the propensity for violent behavior via our SGP (Sustainable Growth Plan). For these individuals, often the visceral reality of the consequences of their actions are lost on them and they need to be given perspectives not available to them in their current situations.
