Emergency and Transitional Pet Shelter and Housing Assistance Program
Tundra Women’s Coalition (TWC)
Proposal Abstract:
The purpose of TWC’s project is to expand our shelter’s ability to provide services to survivors of violence with animals by screening their animals into TWC with them and providing options for their animals to stay in shelter, or board with the local animal rescue program.
The primary activities will include adding additional screening questions around animals to TWC’s intake paperwork for people requesting shelter, partially funding an in-shelter janitor position, building outdoor kennels on shelter land, renovating the local rescue kennel to include an outdoor run in order to increase their capacity for boarding victims’ pets, and partially funding kennel staff to provide partial care for boarded pets.
The expected outcomes will include victims’ increased access to shelter, an increased number of survivors with animals in shelter, increasing veterinary access for victims’ animals, and education in the Bethel community about the link between animal violence and domestic violence.
TWC’s service area is the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta region of Western Alaska, but TWC is located in Bethel, Alaska, and project activities will occur only in Bethel. About seventy percent of the people in TWC’s shelter are from the surrounding villages. The intended beneficiaries will be mostly Alaska Native families, which is the primary beneficiary of all TWC services.
The sub recipient on this grant will be Bethel Friends of Canines, the local animal rescue non-profit organization.
