Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $163,224)
Sojourner House will help victims of abuse in Rhode Island meet their immediate needs while also empowering them to take the first steps toward their long-term goals. For example, many of the victims entering our shelters or housing programs arrive with few or no possessions. They need help with food, household supplies, and transportation to get to appointments. These basic needs are critical to their physical and emotional health and that of their children. They also face barriers to investing in their future through job training or employment. For example, they do not have the financial resources to purchase appropriate clothing for a job interview or a uniform for a new position. They can not afford to pay for training programs or for testing and licensing fees, such as for a nursing assistant position. Often, a small investment of funds can help them overcome these initial obstacles so that they can stabilize their immediate circumstances and start working toward long-term health and independence.
