Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $35,000)

The purpose of this project is to assist States in developing effective strategies for establishing State Victim Assistance Academies (SVAA) - planning for an SVAA that provides comprehensive, academically-based, fundamental education and training for victim service providers, victim advocates, criminal justice personnel, and allied professionals who routinely interact with victims of crime. The New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety will plan the State Academy for New Jersey, with their University partner yet to be selected.

The strategic goals for the New Jersey State Victim Assistance Academy in their first (planning) year are to:

1. Establish a diverse Steering Committee
2. Hire project coordinator
3. Hire a curriculum development consultant
4. Identify suitable university faculty as partners for curriculum development and/or instruction
5. Conduct and analyze findings of a statewide training needs assessment and survey questionnaire
6. Develop curriculum
7. Develop selection protocol for potential instructors and students
8. Develop an evaluation plan
9. Develop a viable financial plan for sustaining the program
10. Submit all required reports to OVC
