Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2015, $1,899,763)

The Office for Victims of Crime's (OVC) Vision 21: Transforming Victim Services Final Report (Vision 21) envisions that “all crime victims in the 21st century can readily access a seamless continuum of evidence-based services and support that will allow them to begin physical, emotional, and financial recovery.” However, Vision 21 recognizes there are serious challenges to achieving this goal. Improving the field’s understanding of violence and trauma and their effects on victims and survivors are among these challenges. To this end, OVC collaborated with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to release the FY 15 Supporting Male Survivors of Violence solicitation. This solicitation sought to improve responses to male survivors of violence, particularly boys and young men of color, and their families, by funding demonstration projects that put in place evidence-based models and practices to provide trauma-informed, comprehensive services and dedicated training and technical assistance (TTA) to support these efforts. Given the solicitation's dual purpose, applications were sought in two purpose areas – Purpose Area 1 (PA1): Demonstration Projects and Purpose Area 2 (PA2): TA Projects.

Youth ALIVE! will use its $2,000,000 PA2 award to provide dedicated TTA to 12 demonstration sites funded under PA1. TTA will assist sites efforts to identify, reach and enhance supportive services and policies for male survivors of violence. The Healing Justice Alliance (the Alliance), a unique partnership established between Youth ALIVE!, Cure Violence, and Berkeley Media Studies Group, will deliver comprehensive and communications TTA that support effective practices, enhance the capacity of existing programs, and expand collaborative learning. Site TTA needs will be met through a myriad of activities including in-person trainings, site visits, peer-to-peer learning, customized technical assistance and use of online resources. The Alliance will also maintain a pool of cross-disciplinary experts to meet site needs.
