Barbara Ann Skudlarick | Volunteer for Victims Award
Families and Friends of Violent Crime Victims
Blaine, Washington

Barbara Skudlarick has been a volunteer serving victims of crime since 1997. For more than a decade, she has inspired collaboration and change within her community. As a volunteer, Skudlarick demonstrates dedication and compassion for victims of crime. Her natural ability to advocate endears her to the families she serves and creates lasting relationships.

Skudlarick is a retired R.N., retired flight attendant, former Vice President and Director of the National Air Disaster Alliance and Foundation Family Support Team, member of the Family Assistance Foundation and Aviem International, Victim Advocate for Families and Friends of Violent Crime Victims (FNFVCV), Board Member of Kids Council Northwest, and a Support Officer Community Care, Family Support Team leader.

Skudlarick was instrumental in bringing victim services to her community. She recognized the need for long-term advocacy for victims of violent crime through her work with Support Officer Community Care. She became a volunteer with FNFVCV, which was founded in 1975 with only one office in Everett, Washington. Three years ago, FNFVCV was able to open a satellite office in Whatcom County due to her efforts.

Her work with crime victims is well-known not only in Washington State, but nationwide. As part of the Aviation Family Support Team, she flew to Washington, D.C., after the September 11 attacks to support surviving family members of those who were killed in the attack on the Pentagon. Skudlarick spent 3 weeks in Washington, comforting victims’ families and listening for hours to the heartbreaking stories of friends and family members of the victims. She also traveled with Lummi tribal members to bring totem poles to Washington in honor of the September 11 victims.

Skudlarick worked as a TWA flight attendant for 11 years and became a member of the National Air Disaster Alliance and Foundation shortly after she retired from TWA. She is available in her community to provide onsite support, followup care, referral services, and courtroom support, always keeping in touch with families in crisis situations.

Barbara Skudlarick was nominated by Holly Diaz, Lead Victim Advocate, Families and Friends of Violent Crime Victims, Bellingham, Washington.
