Zoe's Story: A Journey Through (and Beyond) the Legal System Audiobook

Zoe’s Story shares the experiences of a young girl who was sex trafficked and presents in court as a defendant.

This graphic novel follows Zoe as she—

  • shares her story with a lawyer and social worker after she is arrested,
  • learns that someone she cared about was doing something illegal, and
  • engages with a survivor-led support group that offers a safe space to discuss her feelings about the case and the new terms she’s hearing, like “victim” and “survivor.”

Throughout the audiobook, Zoe and anyone following her story, learns some techniques to help cope with strong feelings.

Sergio's Story: A Journey Through (and Beyond) the Legal System Audiobook

Sergio’s Story describes the experience of a young boy who was a victim of labor trafficking and is part of a federal case.

The story follows Sergio as he shares his experiences with a trusted adult, meets with a victim advocate in the prosecutor’s office who supported him as he navigated the criminal legal system, and receives support from family and a caseworker.

Throughout the audiobook, Sergio and anyone following his story, learns some techniques to help cope with strong feelings.

Jamie's Story: A Journey Through (and Beyond) the Legal System Audiobook

Jamie’s Story follows a young individual who identifies as nonbinary and serves as a victim witness in a sex trafficking case.

The story follows them as—

  • they are questioned during a police investigation;
  • speak with a prosecutor in preparation for testifying in court; and
  • receive support from their therapist, group home staff, and victim advocate.

Throughout the audiobook, Jamie and anyone following their story, learn some techniques to help cope with strong feelings.

In recognition of January’s National Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Month, we hosted this 20th Anniversary Commemoration of OVC’s Anti-Trafficking Programs event.

The event theme is Collaboration, Transformation, and Impact: 20 Years of OVC’s Anti-Trafficking Efforts, which highlights grantees’ impact on the lives of thousands of trafficking survivors over two decades of OVC funding, assistance and support, while also looking to the future as the Department of Justice’s response to human trafficking continues to evolve.

FY 2023 Tribal Set-Aside Formula Program Consultation

OVC invited Tribal leaders, representatives, and stakeholders to participate in a November 9, 2022, consultation on the Tribal Set-Aside from the Crime Victims Fund for Fiscal Year 2023. Attendees discussed enhancing the FY 2023 Tribal Victim Services Set-Aside Program application process, improving outcomes for projects that include major renovation and construction; and strengthening services for families of Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP).

Victim Compensation - Writing a Comprehensive Annual Report

This OVC webinar provides guidance for VOCA Victim Compensation Grantees on how to use the performance measure data entered into the Performance Measurement Tool (PMT) to inform the annual report. During the webinar, members of the OVC’s performance measurement team provide information on the annual reporting questions and explore each question and what responses should entail. This OVC webinar provides guidance for reporting on the required performance measures for the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Victim Compensation formula grant program. Members of OVC’s performance measurement team provide an overview of performance management, processes for accessing the Performance Measurement Tool (PMT) system, entering quarterly performance measures, generating the annual grantee report, and troubleshooting strategies and additional resources. Crime Victim Survivors: The Power of the Personal Story - Episode 3: Unique Patterson

October 2022

In this podcast, we hear from Unique Patterson who discusses his experience as a gun violence survivor who suffered paralysis from the victimization. Joining Unique on the podcast is Dr. Liza Chowdury, Director of the Paterson Healing Collective, a hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP). Staff of the Paterson Healing Collective connected with Unique while he was in the hospital, recovering from his injuries. In addition to receiving supportive services, Unique also received financial assistance from the state compensation program.
