Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $150,000)

To coincide with the 2010 National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, on September 25, 2010, the grantee will co-host a national forum in Washington, DC, focusing on the challenges faced by victim's families, their communities and he Nation after a homicide. The forum will conclude with a closing ceremony honoring the memory of victims lost to homicide. The grantee, the National Organization of Parents Of Murdered Children, Inc. (POMC), will collaborate with the Maryland Crime Victims' Resource Center, Inc. (MCVRC) to conduct this national forum and commemorative ceremony in an effort to promote public awareness of victim issues and rights, provide emotional support to the survivors of victims of violent crimes, and serve as an informational venue about surviving the loss of a loved one to murder. The forum will acknowledge the resulting long-term trauma for families and friends of murder victims and inform the general public of the rights and services available to victims or survivors of violent crime. A resource guide will be developed highlighting and promoting the promising practices of victim service providers and allied practitioners who serve those effected by homicide. The guide will also provide relevant homicide related statistics will be available electronically on POMC's and MCVRC's websites. The grantee will provide technical support to any organization wanting to plan their own event to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance.
