Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $400,000)
Mr. Arvizu proposes a project aimed to address significant gaps in victim identification and services for underserved communities by identifying and promoting service models that center cultural practices and values in their approach to providing direct services. The project will highlight strength-based interventions that strengthen responses to labor trafficking, ensure access to support for male victims, and enhance access to services by promoting survivor choice. The project components will include: (1) partnering with subject matter experts, community leaders, and service organizations from across disciplines to identify models of care that embed strength-based, culturally responsive practices into the core of their service models; (2) documenting the impact of these approaches, highlight culture as a protective factor, and share findings with the anti-trafficking field through widely shared, public dissemination of materials and presentations; (3) contributing significantly to the update and expansion of training and technical assistance materials to increase the capacity and availability 5 of strength-based, culturally responsive services for human trafficking victims in underserved communities; and (4) producing a written analysis of the implications of these models on existing victim services, with a specific focus on OVC policies and programs.
