Under this project, Northeastern University will undertake examination, assessment, identification, and pilot testing of evidence-based policies, practices, procedures, and protocols designed to understand and address vicarious (or secondary) traumatic stress in victim assistance professionals, law enforcement personnel, and other first responders who are subject to the impact of traumatic stress due to (1) large-scale incidents of criminal mass violence; or (2) a series of exposures to an accumulation of traumatizing incidents. Northeastern, in partnership with organizations representing law enforcement, victim assistance, mental health, emergency medical services, and fire chiefs will engage in several activities to meet this project goal: (1) conduct a literature review; (2) survey representatives of law enforcement, victim assistance, mental health, EMS, and firefighters; (3) identify and compile effective practices; (4) identify gaps and strategies to fill them; (5) develop and compile resources to create a draft technical assistance toolkit; (6) develop a multi-site pilot-testing plan; (7) implement the pilot test; and (8) evaluate and refine the toolkit. ca/ncf
