This study examined the impact of increased oil development in the Bakken region of Montana and North Dakota on domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking (DVDVSAS).
Abstract
The goal of this study was to examine the impact of increased oil development on domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking in the Bakken region of Montana and North Dakota. Study results showed significant increases of sexually-based crime in oil-impacted communities. Study findings also showed a rise in crime during the peak of the oil boom period (2008-2012) that seriously strained regional-community infrastructures (e.g., lack of needed personnel, affordable housing, and social and behavioral services).
