The Vicarious Trauma Toolkit

The Vicarious Trauma Toolkit (VTT) was developed on the premise that exposure to the traumatic experiences of other people—known as vicarious trauma—is an inevitable occupational challenge for the fields of victim services, emergency medical services, fire services, law enforcement, and other allied professionals; however, organizations can mitigate the potentially negative effects of trauma exposure by becoming vicarious trauma-informed.

September 25: National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims

In 2007, the U.S. Congress designated September 25 of each year as the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. The resolution states that this day provides “an opportunity for the people of the United States to honor the memories of murder victims and to recognize the impact on surviving family members.”

Zero Abuse Project

This organization seeks to protect children from abuse and sexual assault by providing education and training, research, advocacy, and advancing technology. The Zero Abuse Project’s website offers a victim assistance section that provides information on survivor support programs.

Linking Systems of Care for Children and Youth Project

This demonstration project was designed to reach underserved children, youth, and families in Illinois, Montana, Ohio, and Virginia who are victims of crime. The four demonstration sites worked in their states to meet the needs of children and youth (and their caregivers) who had been exposed to violence. A Coordinator Toolkit provides guidance and tools for jurisdictions interested in replicating this project.
